9 Tips for Successful Work-Family Balance

Working in health care is not always easy. The challenge of balancing work and family can seem insurmountable, as you sometimes feel that you would need days longer than 24 hours to meet all your family and work obligations. In reality, it’s not an impossible task.

You can find a balance between your professional and personal life. This requires organization and changes in habits. Here are 9 strategies that you can easily implement to achieve work-life balance and restore harmony in your life.

1. Learn to say no

Everyone dreams of having more time, but unfortunately, it is not possible to make time. If you don’t set limits, you will always find yourself running after time.

Does your employer want to change your schedule at the last minute or add extra work? Does a friend ask you for a favour when you have something to do? You have the right to say no.

To succeed in balancing work and family, you need to set priorities. Stop accepting tasks out of guilt or a false sense of obligation. You’ll soon find that you have more time for the things and people that really matter to you.

2. Plan your meals

Make the menu for the week in advance. This will avoid stress, improvisation and unbalanced meals. You can also cook large portions on weekends and freeze them for lunches. This way you will have more quality time during the week with your family. Remember to buy a slow-cooker, you’ll be happy to find the meal ready when you get home.

3. Eat as a family

Even if the schedules of the different members of your family do not allow you to spend a lot of time together, find a way to eat at least once a day as a family. A family meal is a good time for discussion and encourages complicity. It’s a chance to find out what’s going on in each other’s lives and to show your family how much they mean to you.

4. Involve your children

Do not hesitate to involve the children in various household chores. For example, depending on their age, they could, make their lunches, take out the garbage, put away the dishes, fill the dryer, etc. Not only will this free up your time, but it’s also a good way to instil in them the value of work.

One way to encourage toddlers to participate is to ask them to be your assistant. You can also have them play music or dance. This will allow them to combine fun with household chores.

5. Limit time-wasting activities

What is important in your life? What are your priorities? Who are the people you spend time with? In answering these questions, you may find that you spend too much time on your mobile phone, on social networks, and that some of the people you spend time with are less constructive.

Sort through the list and, rather than putting your time and energy into everything, limit yourself to the activities and people you consider to be priorities. Remember that to be successful in balancing work and family, you need to set your priorities. It may sound selfish, but to be a good friend, mother, partner or employee, you have to be good at being yourself first.

6. Life is not perfect, so why be perfect?

We spend a lot of time comparing ourselves to others. At the end of your life, will a tidy house have brought you as much happiness as a morning of family conversation? Accept that not everything can be perfect. Be forgiving to yourself. If you set your expectations too high, you’re likely to be disappointed.

7. Take care of yourself

You are dedicated to your job of caring for your patients. But don’t forget to take care of yourself. A healthy lifestyle is essential for coping with the stress of daily life and better work-family balance.

Make sure you eat a balanced diet, get enough sleep, and find time each day for an activity you enjoy. Surround yourself with people you can trust and rely on when you need them. Establish a routine to help you get your day off to a good start.

8. Ask for help if needed

There is no shame in asking for help. Do you have friends or relatives who can help you from time to time? Don’t hesitate to call on them.

Some people decide to pay for a housekeeper or caterer. It’s up to you to see what you can do and what suits you.
